Pulmatrix has received multiple competitive grants and awards to support development of iCALM therapies This is validation that iCALM therapy represents a promising and fundamentally new approach to prevent and treat infections caused by a broad array of respiratory pathogens. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) In September 2010, Pulmatrix received a contract for $5.8 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), part of the U.S. Department of Defense, to develop a novel inhaled therapy that prevents and treats airborne biological threats in soldiers during deployments. DARPA’s mission is to maintain technological superiority of the U.S. military and to prevent technological surprise from harming national security. The agency, as part of the 7-Day Biodefense program, seeks to develop highly innovative approaches to counter any known, unknown, naturally occurring or engineered pathogen. Pulmatrix research investigates novel technologies to prevent infection and/or render multiple pathogens less infectious by enhancing the host response. Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) In November 2010, Pulmatrix was awarded $244,479 under the IRS Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project. This award will support further development of the iCALM platform and therapies. The Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) is provided under new section 48D of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). The QTDP grant is targeted in part to therapeutic discovery projects that, like the iCALM platform, show a reasonable potential to result in new therapies to treat areas of unmet medical need or prevent, detect or treat chronic or acute diseases and conditions National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) In September 2009, Pulmatrix received a grant for $2.2 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), aimed at advancing the development of novel influenza therapeutics for the treatment of seasonal and pandemic influenza. Pulmatrix’s proprietary iCALM approach for treating influenza was identified as one of the most promising new approaches to support NIAID’s Strategic Plan for Biodefense Research, which emphasizes the development of broad spectrum therapeutics to address high priority infectious agents. This funding supports research to identify lead formulations for the treatment of influenza infection and the reduction of airborne contagion in pre-clinical models. Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) During 2003-2005, Pulmatrix successfully completed a $1.8 million contract for the Technical Support Working Group (TSWG), a federal program which operates as a program element under the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO). TSWG is the national interagency research and development program for combating terrorism requirements at home and abroad. The TSWG contract funded early stage iCALM development as a countermeasure agent to prevent the spread of respiratory infection among human and livestock populations. |
